This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of Science. It is an opportune time for all of us to celebrate the accomplishments, to review our successes and failures, and to plan our next steps for the year ahead.

Time brings on challenges and every challenge is an opportunity to influence our path and engage one another to excel to new heights. Thanks to the contributions of each of our incredible members, we are easily made spirited and encouraged to move eagerly ahead. With time, the Faculty has emerged strong and positive. Today, we have over 420 faculty members, 2,000 undergraduate and postgraduate students, and 16,000 alumni. Many of which have gained reputation and recognition of their excellence in research, teaching and learning, community engagement, and achievements. We have played a pivotal role in scientific advancement and have contributed to our society.

Time brings about change. The Faculty strives to provide state-of-the-art laboratories for our researchers, and modernized teaching-and-learning environment for our students. With the advanced facilities and the dedication of our research teams, the Faculty continues to shine in the area of research success. In the past decade, we have surpassed our previous achievements and have experienced an upsurge in our research capability and visibility. We have been able to secure over $237 million from the Research Grant Council, $302 million from other externally-funded research grants and $62 million from collaborative research projects. We have successfully launched 13 spin-off companies with the help of $63 million donations. We have established new collaborative research networks with over 68 universities. The Faculty has also committed to provide high-quality teaching and global learning experiences to our students. Since 2010, the Faculty has introduced six new undergraduate and four new taught postgraduate programs to best equip our students with the knowledge and skills to fulfill emerging talent needs, flourish in evolving fields, and succeed in this rapidly changing world. These encouraging performances will continue to bring momentum and serve as impetus to the Faculty in the near future.

With regards to the occasion of the diamond jubilee, I am indebted to our staff, students, alumni, advisors, donors, partners, and friends. Over the next 10 years, the Faculty will further expand its facilities through the redevelopment of the Ho Sin Hang Campus in order to further upgrade our learning and research environment.
